DAISHO - Katana & Wakizashi -available on Apr. 5, 2018

390.00

A pair of long and short sword worn by the Samurai is called Daisho and was popular during the Shin-to period 1600-1764.

Kris Cutlery has paired the Katana 27 and Wakizashi IV into a Daisho. The Katana 25 can also be used instead of the 27. Most parts are similar like the fuchi-kashira, black ray skin, tsuba, bohi on the blade and black lacquered saya. Menuki are both dragon with the Katana a shorter one and brighter finish.

KATANA 27
The 1060 high carbon steel blade is 27" long showing a straight line hamon / temperline. A ¼” wide bohi / groove runs along the top of the blade on both sides. Blade thickness is 5/16” at the habaki and tapers towards the point. This gives an excellent *balance point of 4-3/4” to 5”. At the base of the blade is a brass habaki / sleeve.

Black round tsuba / guard is 2.9” in diameter with two small openings.  The handle measures 10-1/2” long with black same/ray skin panels then wrapped with dark brown poly blend ito / braided ribbon. Gold colored dragon brass menuki / ornament is found under the warp. Two bamboo mukugi / peg is used on the handle. Black fuchi / ferrule and kashira / pommel are used on the handle.

Wood scabbard has a glossy black lacquer with the kurikata / knob with gold colored shitodome / metal inserts. Swords comes with black bag.

BLADE: 27" long, 5/16" thick, sori / curvature ¾”
HAMON: straight with hardened edge to 60+ HRC (hardness)
HANDLE: 10-1/ 2 ", two bamboo pegs
TSUBA: 2.9” diameter
BALANCE POINT: 4-3/4” to 5”

WAKIZASHI IV
Measuring 16” the blade is made from 1060 high carbon steel. The edge section is heated red close to 1500 deg F and quenched in water to produce a hardened edge called hamon. The result is a very hard edge with a softer top area which minimizes the edge from breaking. Bohi or groove on top of the blade makes this Wakizashi relatively light weight. Near the top of the blade is bohi or groove to make the blade lighter without affecting the strength. At the base of the blade is brass habaki or sleeve.

The handle has a black ray skin with brown ito or flat cord wrap. Under the wrap is a long brass dragon menuki or ornament. Both fuchi-kashira or ferrule/pommel are black. One bamboo peg is used to secure the handle from the blade tang. A matching black tsuba or guard has small openings on the side. Wood scabbard is lacquered black with a knob to attach a cord as a belt. Comes with a black sword bag.
