FUCHI #1144 Fuchi is the front piece of a Japanese sword handle and is usually made of metal. At the end of the handle is the kashira. Some are matching sets. However if a set is not available, a nice fuchi is paired up with a plain horn or wood kashira. This is usually preferred over an obviously mismatch set.
This fuchi is for a Tanto or a small Wakizashi. The main piece is black with diagonal designs representing tall grass. Several geese with gold trim are seen on one side. The front panel, where the blade tang goes in, is made of copper. The piece is in excellent condition. Probably from Japan's Edo period (1603-1869), or older. A collector’s piece. $85
