Fuchi is the front piece of a Japanese sword handle and is usually made of metal. At the end of the handle is the kashira. Some are matching sets. However if a set is not available, a nice fuchi is paired up with a plain horn or wood kashira. This is usually preferred than an obviously mismatch set.
This fuchi is for a Tanto or a small Wakizashi. The main piece is copper with light patina. On one side are two butterflies- black with miniscule lines and the other is black with gold application on top.The front panel, where the blade tang goes in, is made of copper. The piece is in excellent condition. Probably from the Edo period (1603-1869 Japan), or older. A collector’s piece. $85
