Fuchi is the front piece of a Japanese sword handle and is usually made of metal. At the end of the handle is the kashira. Some are matching sets. However if a set is not available, a nice fuchi is paired up with a plain horn or wood kashira. This is usually preferred over an obviously mismatched set.
This fuchi is for a Tanto or a small Wakizashi. The main piece is black with fuyo/persimmon with gold application. The other side has nice clean nature designs. The front panel, where the blade tang goes in, is made of copper. There is some gold application on the lip of the open side. The piece is in excellent condition. Probably dates from Japan's Edo period (1603-1869) , if not older. A collector’s piece. $85
