A wooden sword used for training is called Boken/Bokken in Japanese.  

 Bokken made from an  ebony hardwood is heavier than most other woods of the same size. This weight is an advantage for building strength in sword training. The long blade section is 29” long with a flat top ridge and a rounded thick bottom. Long handle section is 11” with an oval cross section to simulate a katana handle. Total length is 40”. Balance is excellent and a good choice for suburi or individual training. Average weight is 1.7-1.8 pounds. Macassar  ebony used on this Bokken set have different color streaks ranging from light brown to dark and almost black.   

 Used in Kendo, Aikido and Kenjitsu.
