Meiji Tanto #7708

1,500.00

Meiji period Japan dated from 1868 to 1912. It was an era when feudal Japan society opened up to the Western world. Fine metal works emerged that were beyond the Western counter parts.

The all metal covered tanto is very striking showing a series of Tokogawa mon of triple hollyhock. Inside is a long 11” single blade called hirazukuri. The blade is probably folded and showing a faint thin straight hamon or temperline. An access# E343252 is scribed on the top ridge of the blade near the habaki.

Habaki or sleeve is gold color and is the double type i.e. two piece. Handle is 5-1/4” long and fuchi or ferrule is the only non-gold color in the whole tanto.

The kurikata or knob on the scabbard is intact. Overall this piece is better than most for the age. A beautiful tanto for collection, display or investment….at a reasonable
