KERIS pandowo lare

1,100.00

Beautiful shallow 5 wave blade called Pandowo Lare (children of Pandowo –Ramayana epic). The pamor or lamination pattern is a combination of Air Tetes (water falls) and Untu Walang (grasshopper’s teeth).  This is made by combining steel/iron with nickel at very high temperatures and folded a certain way to achieve the pattern intended. After the blade is polished it is etched with lime and arsenic to bring out the pattern. The dark or gray color is steel and the frosty silver color is nickel.

Traditional hardwood handle is Surakarta style with mendak / ferrule with subdued gold color. Gayaman style scabbard shows a first class hand painting only found in museum. A giant’s face is painted in the center of the top scabbard, depicting a mythical Buto Rambut Geni  with fiery hair and tongue sticking out. The surrounding area has a series of teal color floral designs on a black background. Thin curly-q gold lines are also visible. A brass pendok / sleeve has hand chiseled floral designs and plain on the other side.

From Surakarta, Java acquired in 2002 (Recently found the correct date- 1992). Intricate quality hand painting this good is rare. The best in Indonesia and is at par with some of the ones in the museum. $1100
