ARIBONG –SANDUKO #2
Somewhere in the highlands of Panay or Panay Bukidnon are found short swords with unusual handle and scabbard design. The handle has a figure with bulging eyes and a long curve pointed nose. Equally interesting is the scabbard with a long up turned bottom section. They are called Taribong or Sanduko.

It has a typical chisel type blade 19-3/4” long and 3/16” thick near the guard. The blade has a grayish patina. Wood handle and round guard is carved one piece. The grip section has a hexagon cross section with some geometric carvings. At the end of the grip is gargoyle like figure with bulging eyes, a short horn and long sweeping nose. Mahogany wood scabbard has a large 1 peso coin attached on top and a panel below with floral carvings. Bottom section of the scabbard curves up and has a series of black vine bindings.

This piece is scarce and difficult to get. It represents the Taribong/Sanduko of the past. Definitely a collectors piece with historical significance. Made in Panay, Philippines 2015.
