KOREAN SWORD – V

Ancient Korean swords had single edge straight blades. This design is also found in China. It predates the development of the Japanese Katana. 

 The 27” straight blade has a visible temper line. Below the temper line is extremely hard edge and the upper section softer as a result of selective hardening.  Near the guard, the blade is ¼” thick and tapers to 1/8” an inch from the point. It has a brass sleeve at the blade base. Flanked by brass spacers is a black coated iron guard that is 2-7/8” in diameter with 2 small openings. 

The 8” the handle tapers slightly to towards the back and has a black coated ferrule and pommel. A bamboo peg on the handle is used to secure it to the blade tang. Wood scabbard has a cord knob near the top. Both the handle and scabbard are painted black with “splatter” finish. A black bag is supplied with the sword.

Balance of the sword is similar to WWII Japanese Katana and late 1800 Chinese swords of similar blade length. This might feel “heavy” for some who are not used to it. But the forward movement of this type of sword can help in cutting and actually less tiring after awhile.
