Roman Gladius
Historically one of the most famous short swords used
in battle by the Roman Legions and Gladiators.
This model is based on a sword found at the volcanic
ruins of Pompeii near Mt. Vesuvius 79 AD in
Italy. The double edge blade is 20-3/4 inches long and
terminates into an acute tip - a design feature that was used
effectively for cutting and thrusting. Handforged 5160
steel blade has a hardened edge.It has a
slightly scalloped octagonal grip 4 inches long made of
cream color hardwood. The small guard is made of
Macassar ebony with a brass plate in front.
Spherical ebony wood pommel has a brass cap at the
end where the tang is attached. Comes with a
wood scabbard covered by a thin black leather. The
fittings on the scabbard are made of brass. Weighs 1.8 lbs.
without a scabbard. Balance point is around 5 inches.
Reg. $275 SALE $249
Two specimens can be seen at the Naples Museum,
Italy: one with a complete handle and scabbard and
the other, just the blade. Originally recovered from
Gladiator headquarter in Pompeii.
