MORO BARONG
The wide leaf-shape blade of the Barong is essentially
a pointed cleaver. It is highly favored by the Tausug warriors in one to one combat due to its' tremendous slicing capabilities and ease of use in sword fight.
With blades measuring 9-24 inches long the Barong is a close combat short sword. It is found in Sulu, S. Zamboanga, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and N. Sabah. The end
of the handle is a stylized head of a bird/parrot cockatoo. The grip part of the handle is usually a cylindrical metal (brass, silver or alloy) or a series of metal bands and braided wire wrap.
The blade could be one type of steel or folded. Only the edge is hardened and is also known more recently as differentially tempered. Bunti (Murraya sp.) hardwood is the choice for handles.
