Kris Cutlery NAGINATA III – 1060 steel
The blade is 12-3/4” long and is .31” / 5/16” thick near the habaki or brass sleeve. The long “swedge” on top of the blade is not sharp and adds to the nice balance of the blade.  Forged 1060 steel is used with a hardened edge called hamon. The blade is polished and the visibility of the hamon can be faint.  Hamon is produced by selective hardening where the edge of the blade is very hard and top section is softer to absorb the shock in use . Long tang is 12-1/4” long.

A round or egg shape cross section wooden pole is used to mount the Naginata blade. Other possibilities are to shorten the tang to produce a tanto or add a very long handle for a nagamaki.
